House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that the administration should consider expanding the $700 billion bailout to include car companies.

You know, there is something I agree with Pelosi and Reid on. A healthy automobile manufacturing sector is essential. However, I believe that where we differ is in the size of the auto industry. They want to keep it the size that it is, but to me it’s quite obvious based on the way that the Big Three are burning through cash, they can’t continue to exist the way they are.
Bailouts to support the big Three the way they are or programs for retraining and even reemployment of the auto workers who are going to lose their jobs?
I’d vote for the employee retraining.

Paul Kedrosky, one of my favorite writers on the web, has a good discussion about financial stimulus proposals. Well worth the read because I believe we are going to be seeing more discussions of that going forward. Especially since Bernanke “opened” the door to those discussions on Monday.
